Two men have been arraigned in Enugu State for the alleged murder of 29-year-old Nweze Chiebonam, who was killed during a bonfire night at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
The suspects, identified as 27-year-old Ezema Onyedikachi and 21-year-old Ugwu Chigozie Anthony, appeared in court on Thursday on charges of conspiracy and murder. They have been remanded in correctional custody pending further proceedings.
The incident happened in the early hours of September 12, 2025, after a bonfire organised by the Faculty of Arts, Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies. Police investigations revealed that the clash began when Anthony’s car had a minor collision with the victim’s vehicle as participants were leaving the event at about 3 a.m. Though the matter appeared settled, the suspects later regrouped and allegedly armed themselves with a dagger.
Investigators said Onyedikachi stabbed Chiebonam in the chest after Anthony handed him the weapon. The victim was taken to hospital, where doctors confirmed him dead. Police also recovered the dagger believed to have been used in the attack.
The Enugu State Police Command condemned the killing and urged young people to avoid violence and seek peaceful ways of resolving disputes.
