Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour has sparked controversy by selling LGBT-themed merchandise in the club’s official store while simultaneously vowing to ban anyone connected to the LGBT community who attends “woke events” from the Etihad Stadium.
The club’s store features rainbow scarves, jerseys with inclusive slogans, and other accessories celebrating diversity and LGBT visibility. However, Sheikh Mansour’s statement appears to contradict this gesture, as he declared, “I will ban anyone forever from the Etihad Stadium who is connected to LGBT and attends the ‘woke’ events that divide our fans.” He further emphasized, “Manchester City will not be turned into a political playground”.
The move has ignited a firestorm in the football world, with fans and critics alike expressing shock and confusion. Some fans hail the merchandise as a positive step towards inclusivity, while others condemn the ban as exclusionary and harmful.
Premier League officials have taken notice, stating, “We take allegations of discrimination very seriously and are committed to ensuring football remains an inclusive sport for all fans and players.” The league is reportedly looking into the matter.
LGBT advocacy groups have also weighed in, condemning any threats of banning individuals based on their sexual orientation or activism. A spokesperson from a leading UK LGBT rights organization said, “Football should be a place where everyone feels welcome and safe. Any suggestion of discrimination or exclusion is deeply troubling”.
The controversy has sparked heated debates, with some labeling it “the most confusing stance in football history”. Others accuse Sheikh Mansour of attempting to profit from the global market while enforcing conservative values.
