Popular Nigerian musician and renowned live-band leader, Akinloye Tofowomo, popularly known as Akiin Shuga, has died.
A statement released by his family today
November 3 says he passed away on October 30, 2025, in New Brunswick, Canada. He was 50 years old.
Born on January 6, 1975, in Ile-Oluji, Ondo State, Akiin Shuga’s life was defined by resilience, passion, and purpose. Stricken by polio at the age of five, he defied physical challenges to become one of Nigeria’s most accomplished live-band performers and music entrepreneurs. His story mirrored Nigeria’s own revival of live music as an essential part of its cultural identity.
In 1998, he founded the Shuga Band that has played to the admiration of all and sundry.
