Trent Will Receive Warm Welcome Regardless of Fan Reaction, Says Liverpool Manager Slot

Liverpool manager Arne Slot insists former defender Trent Alexander-Arnold will receive a warm reception from him and his former teammates when Real Madrid visit Anfield on Tuesday—no matter how the home crowd responds.

Alexander-Arnold, who left Liverpool for Real Madrid in June after running down his contract, is expected to face a frosty reception from some supporters.

The 27-year-old spent more than a decade at Anfield, playing a key role in the club’s resurgence under Jürgen Klopp and Slot, winning two Premier League titles and a Champions League crown.

The England international was occasionally booed by fans during his final months at the club as speculation about his departure grew. Since his exit, Liverpool have struggled in Slot’s second season, losing six of their past eight matches and clearly missing their former vice-captain’s influence.

“I have great memories of the player and of the person,” Slot told reporters on Monday ahead of the clash. “Working with him was a pleasure, and even before that, watching him on TV brought only positive memories. I can recall so many great moments of him in a Liverpool shirt.”

The Dutchman added, “He’ll get a warm welcome from me, for sure. Let’s see first if he’s on the pitch tomorrow—and how our fans decide to react.”

Trent has also spoken ahead of his clash with former teammates: “Mixed emotions, whatever way I’m received is the decision of the fans,” he said

Alexander-Arnold’s move to Spain has not gone entirely to plan. His time at Real Madrid has been disrupted by a recurring hamstring injury, and he has spent several matches on the bench as he works his way back to full fitness.

“No matter what, my feelings won’t change towards Liverpool. I’ve got memories there that will last me a lifetime and, no matter how I’m received, that won’t change,” Trent adds.
