Obi Condemns Wike, Naval Officer Confrontation, Says It Reflects Nigeria’s Failing Institutions

By Abasi Ita

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has condemned the recent altercation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and a naval officer, Lt. A. M. Yerima, describing it as a sad reflection of Nigeria’s deepening institutional disorder.

In a statement shared on his official X handle on Wednesday, Obi expressed disappointment over the incident, which has gone viral on social media, calling it “yet another national embarrassment” and “a symptom of a disgraced system.”

According to the former Anambra State governor, what should have been a simple civic engagement degenerated into a public spectacle that exposes the breakdown of discipline and respect for institutions in the country.

“The recent needless altercation between the FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike, and a naval officer is yet another unfortunate reflection of the growing institutional disorder in our country,” Obi wrote. “What should ordinarily be a routine civic encounter has become a national embarrassment and a typical example from a disgraced nation.”

Obi questioned the increasing use of military personnel for civil functions, stressing that such practices blur professional boundaries and weaken the rule of law.

“Should the military be deployed for purely civil operations? Should there not be a clear separation between administrative authority and security responsibilities?” he asked.

He warned that when public officials disregard institutional norms and when security agencies operate outside their mandates, the consequences are a weakened governance structure and a loss of public trust.

Obi urged leaders to restore respect for institutions, civility, and lawful conduct in public service, noting that a nation that seeks to be respected globally must replace the culture of impunity with the discipline of law and order.

“A country that aspires to greatness cannot continue to normalise lawlessness. We must rebuild our institutions and conduct ourselves in ways that uphold dignity and integrity,” he stated.

He advised political leaders and public servants to demonstrate humility and restraint in their dealings, adding that true leadership is reflected in self-control, respect for due process, and adherence to democratic principles.

Obi’s reaction follows widespread criticism of the confrontation between Minister Wike and the naval officer, which many observers say underscores the growing tension between civil authorities and security agencies in Nigeria.
