A magistrate court in Jos on Tuesday sentenced a 27-year-old miner, Ibrahim Kamilu, to two years in prison for cheating.
The magistrate, Irene Pati, summarily tried and sentenced the convict, who pleaded guilty to the two-count charge of breach of trust and cheating.
Ms Pati, however, in her judgment, gave the convict the option of a fine of N30,000 or one year for breach of trust. She also ordered the convict to pay an additional N20,000 for the offence of cheating or spend one year in prison.
She further ruled that the convict should pay the complainant N570,000 in compensation.
The prosecutor, Inrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported on October 24 at the Laranto police station by the complainant, Mohammed Nafiu.
Mr Gokwat said the convict was given N670,000 to buy chemicals. He, instead, converted the money for his personal use.
The police, however, recovered N100,000 from him when he was arrested.
