The Cross River state government has inaugurated a Building Planning and Development Control Taskforce as part of deliberate efforts to strengthen compliance with planning regulations, address chaotic development, and improve the aesthetic outlook of the state.
Governor Bassey Otu inaugurated the taskforce on Monday in Calabar through his deputy, Rt Hon Peter Odey. He charged members of the enforcement team to discharge their duties with professionalism, fairness, and integrity, describing the taskforce as a critical instrument for tackling unapproved constructions and enforcing planning laws.
The governor said the initiative aligns with his administration’s commitment to urban renewal, sustainable development, and the protection of lives and property. He stressed the need for collaboration among relevant ministries, departments, agencies, and local government authorities to ensure effective enforcement and sustained public sensitization.
He further urged residents and property developers to strictly adhere to approved building plans and established planning guidelines, warning that violations would no longer be tolerated. While emphasizing strict enforcement, the governor cautioned members of the taskforce against victimization in the course of their duties.
Earlier, the Chief Executive Officer and Vice Chairman of the Cross River State Planning Commission, Dr Bong Duke, said the taskforce was carefully constituted to monitor and regulate building development in both urban and rural areas of the state. He expressed concern over the increasing incidence of indiscriminate construction, poor planning practices, and non compliance with approved designs.
Speaking on behalf of the taskforce, its chairman, Akiba Ekpenyong, thanked Governor Otu for the confidence reposed in the members. He assured the state government of the team’s readiness to diligently carry out its mandate and support the administration’s vision of a well planned, safe, and sustainable Cross River State.
