The Edo State Government has confirmed six deaths following an outbreak of Lassa fever in the state.
Speaking to journalists in Benin on Friday, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, disclosed that 28 cases have been laboratory-confirmed so far.
According to him, the spike in infections, especially in Etsako West and Esan West Local Government Areas, points to sustained community transmission and calls for urgent and coordinated action.
Dr. Oshiomhole formally declared a Lassa fever outbreak after an epidemiological review and risk assessment conducted by the Ministry of Health.
“As of today, we have recorded 28 confirmed cases with six fatalities. The recent rise in infections requires an escalated response,” he said.
He noted that the state government had anticipated periodic outbreaks and had taken preventive steps, including the donation of Lassa fever treatment packs to Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital.
In response to the situation, the government has activated all pillars of the Edo State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC). The Director of Public Health will lead the response and provide daily updates to the Commissioner.
The commissioner assured residents that the government remains vigilant and fully committed to protecting lives.
