The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed a brazen attack on St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Katchuan Iruan in Boki Local Government Area. The incident, carried out by suspected arsonists in the early hours of Thursday around 3 a.m., resulted in the destruction of all church records and the torching of two vehicles, including the priest’s Lexus 350 and a Toyota Corolla, parked within the church premises.
Police spokesperson ASP Sunday Eitokpah stated that no suspects have been identified yet, but investigations are ongoing. “Efforts are underway to ascertain those responsible for this unfortunate criminal act. Once any suspect is identified, the public will be informed,” he said.
He added that the scene had been documented, photographs taken, and the case formally recorded before being referred to Okunde Police Station for further discreet investigation.
The attack comes amid growing concerns about the security of religious institutions across Nigeria, particularly in the northern region where similar incidents have intensified in early 2026. The trend has prompted calls from international communities, including the United States, for enhanced protection of religious sites nationwide.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies as investigations continue. Church leaders in the area have appealed for calm while security forces work to apprehend the perpetrators and prevent future occurrences.
