Nigerian international Ademola Lookman will encounter a familiar hurdle in an unfamiliar shirt on Tuesday night(Tonight) as his Atletico Madrid side hosts Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie at the Civitas Metropolitano.
The encounter is laden with personal significance for the Super Eagles forward, who is eager to continue his blistering start to life in the Spanish capital. Lookman’s path to this moment has been one of reinvention. After a modest stint in English football with Everton, Leicester City, and Fulham, his career truly ignited following a 2022 move to Atalanta.
His record against Tuesday’s opponents from his time in the Premier League is unremarkable: four appearances, no goals, a single assist, and no victories. However, the player set to lead Atletico’s attack bears little resemblance to the one who endured those two losses and two draws. Since departing England, Lookman has been reborn as one of Europe’s most incisive forwards, a transformation cemented by a historic hat-trick in the 2024 UEFA Europa League final that delivered Atalanta their first major trophy in over six decades.
Now at Atletico following a €35 million move in January, Lookman has wasted no time justifying his price tag. He has contributed four goals and two assists in just his first six starts under Diego Simeone, seamlessly integrating into the Argentine’s demanding system. His most recent outing, a 53-minute run-out in Saturday’s 3-2 La Liga victory over Real Sociedad, served as a perfect dress rehearsal for next month’s Copa del Rey final and kept his momentum rolling.
They arrive at the Metropolitano in starkly contrasting circumstances. Tottenham’s domestic campaign has unravelled dramatically; they have lost five consecutive matches across all competitions and sit precariously just one point above the Premier League relegation zone. Thursday’s 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace extended their torrid league run to 11 games without a win.
Yet, paradoxically, the Champions League has been a sanctuary for Ange Postecoglou’s side. Finishing fourth in the league phase, they secured impressive 2-0 victories over Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt. Their continental campaign has been defined by defensive resilience, keeping clean sheets in six of their last seven outings in the tournament.
Atletico Madrid, who navigated the playoff round with a 7-4 aggregate thriller against Club Brugge, arrive in solid domestic form but with defensive frailties that Tottenham will hope to exploit. Simeone’s side conceded 15 goals during the league phase—the worst record of any team left in the competition—and have shipped five goals in their last two matches.
For Lookman, navigating past Spurs over two legs would not only avenge past Premier League frustrations but also keep alive the dream of securing a second major European trophy in just three years.
