UNICAL VC Warns Against NYSC Mobilization Racketeering

By Abasi Ita

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong, has declared zero tolerance for any form of racketeering in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme within the institution. He warned that anyone found engaging in such illegal practices will face strict disciplinary action.

Prof. Offiong made the declaration during a pre-mobilisation briefing for prospective corps members and final-year students of the university.

The Vice-Chancellor cautioned that any student attempting to falsify records or manipulate the system to participate in the NYSC programme will have their certificate withdrawn and face stringent disciplinary measures. He noted that the university administration has upgraded its result portal to close loopholes previously exploited for fraudulent activities.

He urged students to maintain proper conduct and avoid actions that could tarnish the reputation of the university, reminding them that they represent the institution wherever they go. Prof. Offiong emphasized the importance of protecting the integrity of the university, highlighting its track record of producing notable alumni contributing nationally and globally.

“Let us collectively work together to preserve the good name of our institution,” he said.

Earlier, the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Eyo Mensah, explained that the briefing was organised to familiarise final-year students with the NYSC mobilisation process. He noted that attendance is compulsory, as it provides guidance on registration procedures, documentation, data reconciliation, and common mistakes to avoid during the mobilisation exercise.

The pre-mobilisation briefing featured presentations on result preparation and NYSC mobilisation by former Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic and Director of Result, Prof. Angela Oyo-Ita, and the NYSC mobilisation chain at the university by Student Affairs Officer, Mr. Agba Ebenezer Agba, among others.

The Vice-Chancellor’s warning underscores the university’s commitment to upholding transparency and integrity in the NYSC mobilisation process.
