The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Zamfara State, Dr. Jamil Magayaki, has officially resigned from his position and defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement released to journalists on Thursday, Magayaki cited recent political developments in the state as the primary motivation for his decision. His departure follows closely on the heels of Governor Dauda Lawal’s exit from the PDP, signaling a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.
Governor Lawal had announced his own defection to the APC on Monday, a move he described as the result of extensive consultations with key political stakeholders, party leaders, elders, and supporters across Zamfara.
Magayaki’s defection statement reads: “I, Dr. Jamil Jibo Magayaki, the Zamfara State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, hereby announce my formal defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress. My decision to join the APC is based on the current political reality in Zamfara State, which demands alignment with a platform better positioned to address the challenges of security, development, and governance for the benefit of our people.”
The chairman’s resignation is part of a broader wave of political realignments in the state, widely seen as strategic positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Governor Lawal, in announcing his switch earlier this week, had pointed to ongoing internal crises within the PDP and the necessity for stronger political collaboration to effectively tackle Zamfara’s pressing security and development challenges.
