Dino Melaye Drops Senatorial Bid, Cites “Sacrifice” for Okun Unity

By Achile Danjuma

Former Senator Dino Melaye has formally announced that he will not contest the Kogi West senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, describing the move as a deliberate act of sacrifice aimed at fostering unity and ensuring political progress in Okunland.

Melaye made this declaration on Wednesday during a strategic political meeting convened at his residence in Kabba. The gathering, held under the umbrella of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), brought together key political leaders and stakeholders from the five local government areas that constitute the Okun axis of Kogi West.

Addressing speculation regarding his political ambitions, Melaye moved swiftly to clarify his intentions.

“I am aware that some people are insinuating that I called this meeting to launch a campaign,” Melaye stated. “Let me make it clear, here and openly: In the interest of Okunland, I am not contesting for anything.”

He emphasized that leadership sometimes requires personal sacrifice. “It is not every opportunity that one must pursue. This moment calls for putting the collective interest above personal ambition,” he added.

Melaye outlined that his immediate focus will be on strengthening the ADC’s party structures and mobilising grassroots support across the senatorial district. He urged stakeholders to ensure that leadership positions at all levels—from the ward to the local government and state—are entrusted to individuals who command genuine grassroots acceptance, warning against the imposition of unpopular candidates.

The former Senator also stressed the need for an equitable political framework, noting that Kogi West is composed of the Kabba/Bunu, Ijumu, Yagba East, Yagba West, and Mopamuro federal constituencies. As political alignments and consultations intensify ahead of the 2027 polls, he cautioned that the interests of these constituencies must be balanced, and no single bloc should be allowed to dominate the others.

Political observers suggest that Melaye’s decision to step aside could significantly reshape the political calculus within the Okun bloc, potentially opening the field for new contenders. Sources indicate that while public declarations are yet to be made, quiet consultations are already underway across the state as parties and aspirants strategize for the upcoming electoral cycle.
