The Center for Development Support Initiatives has called for decisive action to tackle inequality and promote inclusive development as Nigeria marked the World Day of Social Justice 2026.
In a statement released in Port Harcourt, the organisation urged governments at all levels, the private sector and civil society actors to adopt practical measures that ensure fairness and protect vulnerable groups.
CEDSI observed that persistent inequalities across economic, legal and social systems continue to slow national progress, despite the country’s abundant human and natural resources. It noted that the 2026 theme, “Bridging Gaps, Building Alliances,” underscores the need for collective responsibility in addressing these challenges.
The organisation identified economic inclusion, gender equality and climate justice as priority areas requiring urgent attention. It stressed the need to create fair opportunities for young people in emerging sectors, remove barriers limiting women’s participation in leadership and land ownership, and safeguard communities affected by environmental degradation.
Speaking on the development, Acting Country Director Blessing Mark Chikwendu said sustainable development cannot be achieved without protecting the rights and dignity of marginalized populations.
CEDSI also called for reforms to align labour laws with global standards, particularly to safeguard informal workers, increased investment in vocational education for rural communities, and stronger institutions to promote transparency and accountability.
As part of activities marking the day, the organisation announced the launch of its 2026 Social Equity Tracker, a data driven initiative aimed at monitoring access to public services across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to advancing social justice through advocacy and community based interventions, while urging Nigerians to play active roles in building a more equitable society.
