Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has forwarded the name of Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo to the State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as the new Deputy Governor.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad.
The nomination follows Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which mandates the Governor to nominate a replacement for the Deputy Governor whenever a vacancy arises.
The position became vacant after the former Deputy Governor, Comrade Abdussalam Gwarzo, voluntarily resigned on March 27, 2026.
According to the statement, Governor Yusuf undertook wide-ranging consultations with key stakeholders before formally requesting the Assembly’s approval for Garo’s nomination.
Murtala Sule Garo, 48, is described as an experienced political administrator with more than two decades of service in both appointed and elective roles.
His political career includes serving as State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor, and elected Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area. He has also served as Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Kano State chapter; Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs; and was the Deputy Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 general elections.
The Governor stated that the nomination is part of broader efforts to strengthen governance and ensure effective service delivery in the state.
As of the time of this report, the Kano State House of Assembly has not announced a date for the screening and confirmation hearing.
