The Independent National Electoral Commission has updated its portal to reflect the authentic National Working Committee of the Social Democratic Party, following a Court of Appeal judgment that affirmed the party’s leadership.
Reacting to the development on Sunday, National Chairman of the SDP, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, described the ruling as a victory for constitutionalism and the rule of law.
“I must commend the Court of Appeal for standing on the part of justice and allowing the will of democracy to prevail. The judgment is not just a personal victory but a triumph for constitutionalism, due process, and the integrity of our political system,” Gabam said in a press release issued on April 27, 2026.
Gabam noted that INEC’s compliance with the judgment signals institutional strength. “The subsequent update of the INEC portal to reflect the authentic National Working Committee of the Social Democratic Party is democracy in action. This is not a mere administrative adjustment; it is a loud affirmation that our institutions work when guided by the rule of law.”
The SDP chairman praised the judiciary for its role in stabilizing the polity. “The judiciary has once again demonstrated its critical role as the guardian of democracy and the rule of law. At a time when political tensions could erode democratic norms, the Court of Appeal delivered a judgment anchored on constitutional provisions and due process.”
Calling for unity within the party, Gabam declared an end to internal wrangling. “The era of needless litigation, factionalism, and media wars is over. The Court has spoken, INEC has complied, and it is now our duty to unite and rebuild.”
He pledged an inclusive approach going forward: “I assure all stakeholders that my leadership will be anchored on inclusivity, transparency, and respect for the party constitution. Every member, from the ward level to the national level, will be carried along in the task of repositioning the SDP as a credible platform for Nigerians yearning for real change. There will be no victor, no vanquished.”
On the party’s posture toward governance, Gabam stressed constructive engagement. “The SDP under this restored leadership will provide responsible opposition and constructive engagement. We will not oppose for the sake of opposition. Where government does well, we shall commend; where it fails, we shall offer superior alternatives rooted in ideology and the interest of the masses.”
He urged supporters nationwide to refocus on mobilization ahead of upcoming elections. “To our teeming supporters across the 36 states and the FCT, I say remain steadfast. The distractions are over. We are back to the business of mobilization, policy engagement, and grassroots rebuilding ahead of 2026 and 2027.”
Gabam concluded by reaffirming faith in democratic institutions: “Democracy only survives when institutions are respected and judgments are obeyed. With the Court of Appeal judgment and INEC’s action, Nigeria has once again shown that democracy is not an empty slogan. Together, we will protect it, deepen it, and use it to deliver a better future for all. The work begins now.”
