Union Faults Appointment Process of New DUFUTH CMD

By Deborah Coker

The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) has faulted the appointment process for the new Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital (DUFUTH), Uburu, Ebonyi.

The union expressed their displeasure in a letter addressed to the leadership of the National Assembly, and signed by the Chairman of the union, Trevis Ogbonna and Secretary, Chinenye Osuji.

In the letter made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Abuja on Tuesday, the union noted that the union recognised and respect the authority of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in overseeing such appointments.

They also noted that it was the duty of the union as critical stakeholders within the hospital system to draw attention to observed deviations from established guidelines, due process, and principles of fairness, transparency, and equity that ought to govern such important exercise.

“It has come to our attention that the ongoing process raises serious concerns, including but not limited to lack of transparency in the selection procedure, no advertisement, interview, etc.

”It is also pertinent to note that there was inadequate stakeholder engagement, particularly with key unions and internal bodies, and perceived disregard for extant rules and guidelines governing the appointment of CMDs in Federal Tertiary Health Institutions.

”The position of CMD is pivotal to the effective administration, clinical governance, and overall development of the hospital.

”Any process perceived as flawed or biased risks eroding trust, creating avoidable tension, and disrupting the harmonious working environment necessary for quality healthcare delivery.’’

The union leaders therefore called on the minister of health to intervene by ordering an immediate review of the current appointment to succeed the incumbent Prof. Uzoma Agwu, whose tenure would expire on July 1.

They also appeal to the minister to ensure strict adherence to established guidelines and due process, promote transparency, fairness, and inclusiveness in the selection procedure

According to them, this will help safeguard the integrity and credibility of the institution.

They emphasised that the union’s position was guided solely by the desire to protect the institutional integrity of DUFUTH, as well as to ensure that the best possible leadership emerged through a credible and acceptable process.

”We remain committed to maintaining industrial harmony and supporting all lawful efforts aimed at strengthening the health sector.

”However, we also reserve the right to pursue all legitimate avenues available to us should these concerns not be urgently addressed,’’ they added.
