The Nigeria Democratic Congress on Friday commenced its maiden congresses nationwide, marking a major step in its internal democratic process ahead of its first national convention slated for May 9, 2026.
This was disclosed by the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the party, Abdulmumin Abdulsalam, in a statement announcing the rollout of activities across the country.
According to him, ward and polling unit congresses are scheduled to hold on May 1 and 2, while local government congresses will take place on May 4.
The party said the exercises would culminate in its maiden National Convention billed for Abuja on May 9, where key party decisions and leadership structures are expected to be finalised.
“On the back of the ongoing congresses, the NDC is also set for its maiden national party convention, which is scheduled to hold in Abuja on the 9th of May, 2026.
“Preparations for the convention have been concluded by the planning committee. All is now set for the big event, which shall host accredited party faithfuls as well as the relevant INEC officials who are expected to monitor and observe the conduct of the Convention as mandated by the Electoral Act.
Security agencies have also been put on notice to ensure adequate security and safety for accredited party faithfuls, officials and other guests,” Abdulsalam stated.
The party leadership also expressed confidence in its state and national officers to ensure that the congresses are conducted in line with established guidelines and the party’s constitution.
