Ajaka Declares for Kogi East Senate Seat, Cites “Overwhelming” Calls from Elders, Stakeholders

_Ex-SDP guber candidate pledges to mobilize support for Tinubu’s re-election, promises “unity, inclusion”_

Alhaji Yakubu Murtala Ajaka has declared his intention to contest the Kogi East Senatorial District seat in 2027, saying he is answering “overwhelming” calls from elders, youth groups, and political associates across the district.

In a statement released Friday, the former Social Democratic Party governorship candidate said the decision followed months of consultations and was driven by “the need for purposeful representation” and the “prevailing understanding among stakeholders.”

“Over the past months, I have been deeply humbled by the overwhelming show of concern, encouragement, and trust from our people,” Ajaka said. “I have received countless calls, hosted numerous visits, and engaged in meaningful discussions with elders, political associates, youth groups, friends, and well-meaning stakeholders across Kogi East and beyond.”

He noted that “these conversations have consistently centered on the future of our politics, the direction of our people, and the need for purposeful representation,” adding that “many have urged me, with sincerity and conviction, to step forward and offer myself for service in the Senate.”

Elders’ Visit “Stood Out Profoundly”

Ajaka said one moment in the consultations “stood out profoundly”: a visit by “a respected delegation of Kogi East elders who came to my home.”

“Their counsel, wisdom, and unity of purpose further reinforce the responsibility we all share toward the progress and development of our land,” he stated.

“In respect of the wishes of our people, in honour of the prevailing understanding among stakeholders, and in the overriding interest of peace, unity, and collective advancement, I have decided to answer this call. I will, therefore, offer myself to serve as the Senator representing Kogi East Senatorial District.”

APC Unity, Tinubu 2027

Ajaka tied his Senate bid to party stability and the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“This decision is also firmly guided by my commitment to the stability, unity, and progress of our party, the All Progressives Congress,” he said. “It is equally driven by the need to further intensify our collective efforts to mobilize widespread support for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, ensuring the successful delivery of his mandate and consolidating the foundation for his re-election in 2027.”

Though Ajaka contested the November 2023 Kogi governorship election on the SDP platform against current Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of the APC, his statement signals full alignment with the ruling party ahead of the next cycle.

More Consultations Ahead

The Kogi East leader said consultations are ongoing. “During these consultations, I have engaged with critical stakeholders, and I remain committed to further necessary engagements,” he said.

“I look forward to deeper consultations, including with His Excellency, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, as part of the ongoing process.”

He promised to keep constituents updated. “As we move forward, I will continue to consult widely with our people, provide timely briefings, and ensure that every step taken reflects the collective will and best interest of Kogi East. Our people remain my foremost priority.”

“I am committed to a path defined by unity, inclusion, and purposeful representation. Together, we will build a stronger, more prosperous Kogi East,” Ajaka concluded.

The statement was signed by Alhaji Yakubu Murtala Ajaka and dated May 2, 2026.
