The Commissioner of Police in Cross River State, CP Rashid B. Afegbua, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Police Command to providing adequate security for electoral activities in the state ahead of future elections.
Afegbua gave the assurance while receiving the newly posted Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. George O. Yomere, during a courtesy visit to the Command Headquarters in Calabar.
The REC, who was accompanied by members of his team, said the visit was aimed at familiarising himself with the Police Command following his recent deployment to Cross River State.
He also briefed the police leadership on the ongoing voter registration exercise, disclosing that preparations were underway for the commencement of the third phase of the exercise across the state.
Prof. Yomere stressed the need for sustained collaboration between INEC, the Nigeria Police Force, and other security agencies to ensure peaceful, transparent, and credible elections.
He noted that effective security arrangements would strengthen public confidence in the electoral process and help guarantee a stable democratic environment.
Responding, the Commissioner of Police welcomed the new REC and reiterated the Command’s readiness to work closely with INEC and relevant stakeholders in safeguarding the electoral process.
Afegbua assured the electoral body of the Command’s operational preparedness before, during, and after elections, adding that the police would continue to provide a safe and conducive atmosphere for residents to participate freely in all electoral activities without fear, intimidation, or harassment.
The statement was issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command.
