Kwankwaso Endorses NDC Zoning Decision on 2027 Presidency

Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Saturday backed the decision of the Nigeria Democratic Congress to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, saying the move reflects the party’s power-sharing arrangement and commitment to fairness.

Kwankwaso spoke at the party’s national convention in Abuja while addressing delegates, supporters and party stakeholders.

He said, “I support the decision to zone the presidential ticket to Southern so that the region can complete its eight years.

“This is in line with the zoning process and party agreement.”

He also urged Nigerians and party supporters to participate in the party’s mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2027 elections.

“Please register now,” he appealed.

The endorsement came hours after the NDC officially adopted a resolution zoning its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term.

The resolution was adopted during the convention after a motion moved by the lawmaker representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency of Anambra State, Afam Victor Ogene.

Announcing the decision, the National Chairman of the party, Moses Cleopas, said the arrangement was part of a broader power-sharing formula aimed at balancing regional interests within the opposition coalition.

Cleopas added that after the completion of the South’s tenure, the presidential ticket would return to the North in 2031.

“It will be the turn of the North in 2031,” he stated.

The party’s National Executive Committee also ratified the election of members of the National Working Committee during the convention.

The zoning arrangement is expected to boost the chances of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and other southern aspirants ahead of the party’s presidential primary.

The development comes amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election, with opposition figures intensifying moves to build a united front against President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Meanwhile, Obi and Kwankwaso formally joined the NDC in Abuja, where they urged party members to avoid internal disputes and focus on national development.

Speaking during the event, Obi said their decision to join the party was informed by the need for a stable political platform free from internal crises.
