BREAKING: Nollywood Actor Alexx Ekubo Dies at 40 After Prolonged Battle With Liver Cancer

The Nigerian entertainment industry was thrown into mourning, May 12, 2026, following confirmed reports of the death of Nollywood actor and fashion icon, Alexx Ekubo. He was 40.

The news was first reported by TVC News and later carried by several major outlets, including Spectra Africa. According to initial reports, the actor passed away following a private battle with cancer in the liver.

For over a year, fans had expressed growing concern over Ekubo’s absence from public life. His last social media post was dated December 30, 2024. Since then, the _Weekend Getaway_ and _Bling Lagosians_ star remained entirely off the radar, leading to widespread speculation. Today’s announcement confirms that the actor had been battling a serious illness during his time away from the spotlight.

Alexx Ekubo-Okwaraeke, born on April 10, 1986, rose to prominence as first runner-up at the 2010 Mr Nigeria contest and became one of Nollywood’s most bankable stars in romantic comedies and dramas. In 2020, he was named one of the “Most Influential People of African Descent” under 40 by the United Nations for his contributions to entertainment and social development.

Tributes from colleagues and fans have begun pouring in across social media as the industry reacts to the loss. Ekubo was known for his distinctive fashion presence and was frequently featured on best-dressed lists across Africa. He studied law at the University of Calabar and maintained a private lifestyle while advocating for social causes and youth empowerment.

Weeks before today’s confirmation, Nollywood producer Stanley Ontop had shared a public update noting the actor was “doing well contrary to speculations about his health.” Celebrity prophet Bright the Seer also recently released a message calling for prayers for Ekubo amid his sudden disappearance from social media.

Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by his family.
