C’River PDP Screens 45 Aspirants Ahead of Assembly, NASS Primaries

By Inemesit Friday

The Peoples Democratic Party in Cross River State has screened 45 aspirants seeking tickets for the National Assembly and State House of Assembly ahead of the party’s May 21 primaries.

The exercise was conducted by a five member screening panel headed by Fred Osim.

Among those screened was Alex Egbona, the serving representative of Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency, who recently defected from the All Progressives Congress to the PDP.

A breakdown of the aspirants showed that 33 are contesting for seats in the Cross River State House of Assembly, three are vying for senatorial positions, while nine are seeking tickets for the House of Representatives.

Speaking on the party’s readiness for the 2027 general elections, the Cross River PDP State Secretary, Joe Bisong, said the performance of the ruling APC had strengthened the opposition party’s confidence ahead of the polls.

According to him, Nigerians were dissatisfied with the current state of affairs in the country and were looking up to the PDP as an alternative capable of restoring good governance.

Bisong stated that the PDP remained committed to democratic values and had a proven record in governance.

He argued that the APC administration had failed to meet the expectations of Nigerians since assuming power in 2015, adding that citizens would ultimately decide the fate of political parties during the elections.

On the party’s financial capacity to prosecute the 2027 elections, Bisong expressed confidence that the PDP had enough resources to carry out its activities successfully.

He maintained that the party would rely on available funds and the support of Nigerians who desire a better future.

Bisong further urged Nigerians to prioritise long term national development over temporary gains, stressing that the PDP was prepared to offer responsible leadership if given another opportunity to govern.
