Global Peace: Jonathan to Attend DICAN International Conference, Accept Statesmanship Award

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has confirmed his participation in the forthcoming Diplomatic, Security, Trade, and Investment International Conference, where he will be honoured with the DICAN International Award for Statesmanship and Global Peace.

The conference, themed “Information Warfare (FIMI): Strengthening Global Security, Trade, and Investment Through Collaborative Truth: Role of Diplomacy, Intelligence, and Media,” is scheduled to hold on May 20, 2026, at the Rotunda Hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.

Dr. Jonathan accepted the honour from the Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DICAN), citing the credibility of the platform and the importance of the issues to be discussed.

The award recognises his contributions to democracy, peacebuilding and statesmanship across Africa and beyond.

According to organisers, the former president is expected to address participants on global peace and security challenges arising from Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI), disinformation and fake news.

Speaking on the significance of Jonathan’s attendance, DICAN Chairman Idehai Frederick described the former president as a leading voice on democratic governance and global stability.

“President Goodluck Jonathan’s acceptance of this award and his decision to address the assembly underscores the immense credibility of this platform,” Frederick said.

“His enduring legacy as a champion of Nigerian, African and global democracy makes him the definitive voice to speak on safeguarding global peace against the tide of disinformation.”

The high-level summit is being organised in partnership with the Centre for Communications, Development, and Diplomacy in Africa.

Organisers said the event is expected to attract representatives from more than 100 diplomatic missions, including Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Permanent Secretary Ambassador Dunoma Ahmed, ambassadors of the United States, China, Spain and the European Union, as well as security and intelligence agencies, corporate leaders, United Nations bodies and civil society organisations.

Frederick urged stakeholders to treat the issue of information warfare as a major global concern requiring urgent and coordinated action.

“Information warfare is a direct threat to global stability, trade, and democratic institutions,” he said.

“We urge all stakeholders to do absolute justice to the theme. We must emerge from the conference with a unified, collaborative strategy for the ultimate good of the world.”

The conference will also serve as the launch of a global campaign against FIMI, fake news and disinformation.

Other prominent figures expected to deliver institutional messages at the event include Ndudi Elumelu, Henry Ifeanyi Mbadiwe, and Nonye Ayeni.

The event will conclude with an awards ceremony recognising institutions and individuals for exceptional contributions to national development, including Nigerian carrier Air Peace.
