Nigerian Navy Pledges Technology Driven Maritime Security

By Abasi Ita

The Nigerian Navy has reaffirmed its commitment to deploying modern technology and strengthening operational capacity to protect the nation’s maritime assets and infrastructure.

Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, made the pledge during an interdenominational thanksgiving service held at the Navy Protestant Church in Calabar to mark the 70th anniversary of the Nigerian Navy.

Represented by Rear Admiral Chidozie Okehie, the naval chief said the Navy had consistently demonstrated professionalism and integrity in carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.

He stated that the service would continue to align its operations with global best practices through improved surveillance systems and modern operational platforms.

“Since our establishment in 1956, the Nigerian Navy has grown from a small force into a fully fledged Navy capable of carrying out major combat and security operations,” he said.

According to him, the Navy remains committed to safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime resources and critical infrastructure valued at billions of dollars for the economic prosperity of the country.

“We are the sentinel of Nigeria’s maritime assets and infrastructure and we remain ready and committed to protecting them,” he added.

Abbas also urged officers and ratings not to neglect their families, stressing that family welfare remained a priority for the service because of the support families provide to personnel.

In his sermon titled “Unity of Purpose,” Commander Raphael Adelena called on officers and men of the Navy to remain united in the pursuit of national peace and security.

Drawing his message from the book of Ephesians, Adelena said every personnel had a vital role to play in combating insecurity in the country.

He commended the Navy for its professionalism and dedication to duty while urging personnel to pay attention to the spiritual aspect of the battle against insecurity.

“No role is too small to be neglected. We must remain united to celebrate more successes. Celebration is a clarion call for all to work together in unity of purpose,” he said.

Activities marking the Navy’s 70th anniversary commenced on Friday with a Jumat prayer and will continue throughout the week.
