Ousmane Sonko has been elected President of Senegal’s National Assembly, a development his supporters say strengthens his political standing and sets up a new dynamic within the country’s legislature.
An official announcement of the result described the outcome as overwhelming.
“OFFICIAL! Ousmane Sonko has been overwhelmingly elected President of National Assembly of Senegal, strengthening his political influence and setting up a direct institutional rivalry with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye,” the statement said.
Following the vote, supporters celebrated the result. “VIVA Comrade Sonko, Longlive President SONKO!” was posted alongside calls for political change.
The statement also criticized the presidency, saying “Down with French Puppet Faye DOWN!!” and urged readers to “Follow The Sovereign Narrative for more Reports from Senegal.”
Sonko’s election to lead the National Assembly places him at the head of the legislative branch, while President Faye heads the executive. The arrangement is expected to shape upcoming legislative and political debates in Senegal.
