The Cross River State Police Command has taken into custody a 54-year-old man, Godwin Okoko, over the alleged killing of an official of the Traffic Management and Regulatory Agency (TRAMA) in Calabar.
The tragic incident occurred on Monday morning, May 25, 2026, around 9:45 a.m. at Marian Hill during a traffic enforcement exercise carried out by TRAMA officials.
In a statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the police said the officials were on lawful duty when they reportedly came under attack from a commercial minibus driver accused of breaching traffic rules.
During the confrontation, three TRAMA personnel sustained injuries. One of the officers allegedly suffered a fatal chest injury after being stabbed with a screwdriver. Although he was immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment, he was later pronounced dead.
The other two injured officials are still receiving medical attention and are reportedly responding to treatment.
Police authorities said operatives quickly moved to the scene after receiving a distress alert, leading to the immediate arrest of the suspect.
The suspect is currently being detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Calabar while investigations into the matter continue.
The Police Command condemned the violent act and reiterated its commitment to ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice in accordance with the law.
