The Kano State Government has established an 11-member committee tasked with identifying illegal structures and reviewing building approvals within the Kano metropolitan area.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Press Secretary to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Tanko-Muhammad.
Speaking during the inauguration, the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Umar Farouk-Ibrahim, described the assignment as crucial to the state’s physical, economic, and environmental progress.
He expressed concern over the growing trend of building developments carried out without official authorisation, warning that such practices threaten orderly urban growth and expose residents to social, economic, and environmental hazards.
Farouk-Ibrahim urged the committee members to carry out their responsibilities with professionalism, integrity, and dedication.
According to the statement, the committee will be chaired by the Director-General of the Kano Geographic Information System (KANGIS), Dr. Dalhatu Aliyu-Sani.
Other members include a retired Permanent Secretary and former Head of Architecture, Dayyabu Zubairu-Gani; Ahmad Sanusi of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUSTECH), Wudil; and Umar Musa of the Legal Department at the Kano Internal Revenue Service.
Also on the panel are Abubakar Usman, a retired Surveyor-General; Dr. Zainab Ibrahim; and Muzammil Ibrahim-Yakasai of Freedom Radio, among others.
The statement added that Mustapha Fagge, Director of Administration and General Services at KANGIS, will serve as Secretary, while Yusuf Ismail of the Office of the Head of Civil Service will act as Co-Secretary.
The committee’s mandate includes identifying illegal developments in Nasarawa, Tarauni, Kumbotso, and Fagge Local Government Areas, reviewing building approvals issued within the last one year, recommending steps to curb unauthorised construction, and strengthening compliance with physical planning regulations.
It is expected to submit its findings within four weeks.
Responding on behalf of the committee, Dr. Aliyu-Sani thanked the state government for the confidence reposed in them and pledged that members would carry out the assignment with professionalism and commitment.
