Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has secured the presidential nomination of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general election after a decisive victory in the party’s primary.
The result, announced late Wednesday via the party’s official social media page, confirmed that Atiku defeated former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi and former banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen in a direct primary contest held across the country.
According to the official breakdown, Atiku polled 1,855,787 votes to secure the ticket, while Amaechi came second with 509,397 votes and Hayatu-Deen trailed with 180,903 votes. A total of 2,546,457 votes were recorded from a party membership strength of 3,113,599.
The margin of victory placed Atiku far ahead of his rivals, with over 1.3 million votes separating him from Amaechi.
The African Democratic Congress began its presidential primary process on Monday, May 25, 2026, with delegates and members participating from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Party officials noted that the direct primary method was adopted after leading aspirants failed to agree on a consensus arrangement. An earlier plan for affirmation was dropped, with leaders citing compliance with the Electoral Act 2026.
