Alagbe Clinches ADC Gubernatorial Ticket in Oyo

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially selected Gbemileke Alagbe, a 40-year-old banker and PhD holder, as its governorship candidate for the 2027 election in Oyo State.

Alagbe secured the party’s ticket after a competitive primary election that featured five aspirants. He emerged clearly ahead of his rivals in a delegate vote widely described as decisive.

A total of 21,600 votes were recorded during the exercise. Alagbe led the field with 15,107 votes, securing a comfortable win.

His nearest competitor, Niyi Aborisade, finished with 4,307 votes, while Adegboyega Taofeeq Adegoke polled 987 votes. Azeez Adeduntan and Oyebisi Lukmon Ilaka trailed with 500 and 90 votes respectively.

The outcome cemented Alagbe’s dominance within the party structure ahead of what is expected to be a highly competitive governorship race in Oyo State.

Reacting after his victory, Alagbe said the mandate reflected the desire of party members for a new direction built on accountability and inclusive governance.

According to him, the support he received was not personal but a collective endorsement of reform-driven leadership.

“This victory goes beyond me. It reflects the aspiration of our members for purposeful leadership and a better future for Oyo State,” he said.

He pledged to focus his campaign and potential administration on economic growth, transparency, and youth empowerment.

Alagbe also highlighted his professional background in banking and finance, arguing that effective governance requires technical competence and discipline.

“Governance today is about capacity and understanding how systems work. My experience in the financial sector has equipped me for this responsibility,” he added.

Popularly known as “Eleniyan,” Alagbe is regarded in professional and political circles for his academic achievements and banking career.

Political commentators note that his emergence reflects a growing pattern of technocrats entering partisan politics, as voters increasingly prioritise competence and performance over traditional political structures.

Analysts further suggest that his profile may resonate strongly with younger and urban voters seeking reforms in governance and economic management.

His candidacy is expected to heighten political activity in Oyo State as the 2027 elections draw nearer, especially around debates on leadership quality, development priorities, and accountability.
