Human rights activist and presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has called for a ₦500,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers, insisting that the figure is justified by current economic conditions.
Speaking on Wednesday, Sowore argued that workers in the public sector deserve pay that reflects the realities of inflation and the rising cost of living across the country. He maintained that the proposed wage is not excessive but necessary to ensure decent living standards.
He specifically listed security operatives, teachers, medical personnel, and other public servants as groups that should benefit from improved remuneration.
According to him, these categories of workers should not only receive a fair basic salary but also additional allowances, especially those serving in high-risk and essential roles.
“A minimum wage of ₦500,000 is not too much for Nigerian workers,” he said, adding that police officers, soldiers, teachers, doctors, and nurses deserve a living wage.
Sowore further stressed that workers in critical sectors should be rewarded with extra benefits due to the risks and responsibilities attached to their jobs.
