The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has protested the arrest of its House of Assembly candidate in Ekiti State, alleging that the move was aimed at intimidating opposition figures ahead of the elections.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the party described the arrest as an act of political harassment, accusing security agencies of deliberately targeting its members and disrupting its activities in the state.
The ADC claimed the candidate was taken into custody under questionable circumstances, a situation it said had generated anxiety among supporters and political stakeholders.
The party warned that actions perceived as selective enforcement or intimidation could weaken public trust in the electoral process and threaten democratic principles.
Reacting to the allegations, the police dismissed claims of political victimisation, maintaining that the arrest was conducted in line with the law and without any political influence.
The incident has continued to attract reactions across political circles in Ekiti State, with calls for fairness, transparency and restraint from all parties involved.
According to the ADC, democracy can only flourish in an environment where political participants can operate freely without fear of intimidation or persecution.
