Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has inaugurated a 340-capacity bus terminal in Umuahia, the state capital, naming the facility after Professor Nnenna Oti in recognition of her role in the 2023 governorship election.
The project, the Umuahia Central Bus Terminal, was commissioned as part of the administration’s broader transport and infrastructure renewal programme aimed at improving mobility, boosting economic activity, and restoring confidence in public service delivery.
Speaking at the event on Wednesday, Otti said the naming was a deliberate honour for Professor Oti, whom he described as a symbol of courage and integrity for insisting that the electoral process reflected the will of the people.
According to him, her stance during the 2023 governorship election restored public trust in the system, especially at a critical moment in the state’s political history.
Professor Oti, in her response, reiterated that her actions were guided by duty, stressing that she maintained that “votes must count and the will of the people must prevail.”
Governor Otti further explained that the new terminal is part of a long-term transport reform plan that includes the development of modern bus stations, traffic management systems, shelters, and the introduction of electric buses across the state. He added that similar projects are ongoing in Aba and other urban centres.
He also revealed that the state is currently operating 20 electric buses, with additional units expected, as well as more under construction to strengthen intra-city transportation.
The governor acknowledged the contribution of the late Commissioner for Transport, Comrade Sunny Onwuma, who he said initiated the project before his death.
He described the facility as environmentally friendly and designed with inclusivity in mind, including provisions for persons living with disabilities, improved commuter comfort, and modern safety standards.
Government officials say the terminal is expected to reduce traffic congestion in Umuahia, improve passenger experience, create jobs, and increase internally generated revenue.
The Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Austin Nmeregini, praised the initiative, describing it as evidence of purposeful leadership and ongoing transformation in the state.
Similarly, the Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Isaac Ukaegbu, said the facility represents a major milestone in Abia’s transport modernisation agenda, noting that it aligns with efforts to ensure safer and more organised mobility systems.
The Managing Director of Planet Projects, Mr. Biodun Otunola, whose firm handled the project, described it as one of the most advanced transport terminals delivered in Nigeria, adding that strict quality standards were maintained before commissioning.
He disclosed that the terminal includes multiple commercial facilities such as air-conditioned waiting areas, shops, a restaurant, public conveniences, and accommodation services.
Dignitaries at the commissioning included the state’s Deputy Governor, members of the National and State Assemblies, top government officials, traditional rulers, clergy members, and transport union representatives.
