CSOs Blast Betta Edu’s Return to Presidential Circles, Give Tinubu 5-Day Ultimatum Over EFCC Probe

A coalition of civil society organisations has criticised what they describe as the “re-emergence” of the former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Betta Edu, in public and presidential circles without formal exoneration from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The groups, led by the Empowerment for Unemployed Youth Initiatives (EUYI), also faulted her recent appearances alongside the Presidency, particularly engagements involving the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, the coalition alleged that Dr Edu, who was suspended in 2024 over accusations of misappropriating over ₦585 million, was being “reintroduced” into public life despite ongoing corruption investigations.

She was suspended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following public backlash over alleged diversion of funds into a personal account—claims that triggered nationwide concern at the time.

The statement, read by the Convener of the Coalition, Chief Kennedy Tabuko, and co-convener of EUYI, Danesi Momoh, described the situation as troubling, warning that it reflects a weakening culture of accountability.

According to them, it is unacceptable that individuals still under investigation are seen participating in high-level government events, arguing that such actions send the wrong signal about the government’s anti-corruption stance.

Tabuko said it was disturbing that someone facing unresolved allegations could be seen freely engaging within official presidential spaces, adding that it undermines public trust in anti-corruption institutions.

The group further questioned the silence of the EFCC on the progress of investigations, alleging that the public has not been adequately informed about findings in the case while other citizens are prosecuted swiftly for lesser offences.

They also expressed concern that the continued visibility of the former minister around top government officials could damage Nigeria’s image and weaken the fight against corruption.

“It is unacceptable that a sacked minister facing serious allegations is seen moving freely within the corridors of power,” the coalition said, adding that such actions create the impression of impunity.

The CSOs warned that unless transparency is provided on the matter within five days, they would mobilise for a nationwide protest within legal limits to demand accountability.

They insisted that both the Presidency and anti-corruption agencies must act decisively to preserve public confidence in governance and the justice system.

“A word is enough for the wise,” the coalition added, maintaining that failure to act would be resisted through lawful public action.
