A former Senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District, Nkechi Nwaogu, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing alleged unfair treatment within the party.
Nwaogu, who previously served in the House of Representatives for the Osisioma Ngwa/Obingwa/Ugwunagbo Federal Constituency, confirmed her departure during a telephone interview, stating that her decision followed internal party grievances.
According to her, the crisis began after the APC primary election in which Emeka Atuma emerged as the candidate. She claimed the process was flawed and did not reflect a proper election in her political zone.
> “There was no election in my area. I know my strength there. What I saw was manipulation aimed at weakening the party we helped build,” she said.
She further accused certain party stakeholders of abandoning fairness and working against the collective interest of the party.
In recent weeks, there had been growing speculation that she was considering a move to the NDC, while some APC leaders reportedly made efforts to persuade her to remain within the ruling party.
However, the APC in Abia State said it had not received any formal resignation notice. The party’s Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, told reporters that they were unaware of her exit and had not seen any official communication confirming it.
Meanwhile, the development comes amid ongoing debates about the legality and timing of political defections following the closure of party membership registration ahead of the 2027 general elections.
