Aisha Yesufu Withdraws from FCT Senate Race

Activist and political ally of Peter Obi, Aisha Yesufu, has withdrawn from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial race for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), bringing an end to her brief bid for the 2027 election.

Yesufu had, on May 6, declared her intention to contest the FCT senatorial seat after joining the NDC from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing the leadership experience she gained within the party as a key motivation for her ambition.

However, recent developments within the party pointed to internal realignments over the FCT senatorial ticket, with indications that the NDC may have favoured another aspirant, Amanda Pam, who had been a longstanding member of the party prior to Yesufu’s defection.

In a statement on Friday, Yesufu confirmed that the party would not be conducting primaries for the FCT senatorial seat, a decision that effectively ended her participation in the race.

“Our party has decided not to conduct primaries for the Senatorial seat in FCT Abuja. It however intends to conduct primaries for the House of Representatives. Go ahead and make your choice known!” she said.

She called on her supporters to remain calm and continue to focus on the broader political objectives ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The development marks a setback for her senatorial ambition, even as it highlights ongoing internal adjustments within the NDC ahead of the forthcoming polls.

“I urge each and everyone of you to remain calm and focus on the bigger picture which is the presidential election. Nigeria will be OK!” she said.

“I appreciate all your support, dedication and commitment towards #AishaForSenate project.”
She added that she would continue engaging residents across the FCT.

“In the coming week I will be returning back to all the 6 Area Councils God willing to appreciate them for the warm welcome and continue to forge ahead for a #BetterFCT.”
