A driver has lost his life in the early hours of Saturday after a Honda Pilot Sports Utility Vehicle somersaulted multiple times along the Oshodi–Apapa Expressway in Lagos State.
According to a statement by the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, the fatal single-vehicle crash occurred at Charity Bus Stop inward Iyana Isolo.
The driver reportedly died on the spot after the vehicle suddenly lost control, overturned repeatedly, and eventually came to a stop in a badly damaged condition. The impact of the crash left the SUV severely mangled, trapping the driver inside the wreckage.
LASTMA said personnel on traffic duty around the Iyana Isolo axis responded quickly after receiving distress alerts about the incident.
Preliminary findings indicated that the vehicle veered off control before somersaulting several times, leading to the fatal outcome.
Officials of LASTMA, working alongside officers of the Mosafejo Police Division, later evacuated the remains of the deceased from the wreckage while also managing traffic flow to prevent further accidents in the area.
The statement added that operatives of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit subsequently conveyed the body to a public morgue, while the wrecked vehicle was handed over to the police for further investigation.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads.
He warned against speeding, reckless driving, and dangerous overtaking, stressing that road users must prioritise safety over urgency at all times.
Bakare-Oki further stated that no journey is worth risking lives, urging motorists to avoid traffic violations capable of leading to preventable tragedies.
