Two people have lost their lives after a vehicle veered off the road and plunged into the Ariyo River along the Amuloko axis in Ona Ara Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The incident occurred on Friday night and involved a Toyota Avensis with an unidentified registration number, which reportedly lost control before falling into the river.
Confirming the development on Saturday, the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, said emergency responders recovered the bodies of the victims and handed them over to the police for further investigation.
According to him, the fire service received a distress call at about 21:40 on May 29, 2026, reporting that a moving vehicle had crashed into a river.
He said firefighters, led by ACFS Amoo, were immediately deployed to the scene, where they discovered that the car had left the road and submerged in the water.
Rescue officials then carried out recovery operations and successfully retrieved two bodies from the submerged vehicle using standard emergency procedures.
Akinwande added that the remains were later handed over to police officers from the Ogbere Target Police Station in Ibadan for further investigation.
He noted that the fire service responded swiftly to the emergency and completed the operation in line with safety and rescue protocols.
