The Cross River State Police Command has said investigations are ongoing into the alleged murder of two persons in Creek Town, Odukpani Local Government Area of the state, following the arrest of a suspect linked to the incidents.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, said the suspect, identified as 40-year-old Akaninyine Eretus, is currently in police custody and assisting investigators.
According to the police, the suspect allegedly admitted during interrogation to the killing of two individuals identified only as Okokon and Okon on May 24 and May 25, 2026, respectively.
The police said the suspect claimed that one of the victims was killed while asleep, while the other was attacked with a machete.
Investigators further disclosed that the suspect allegedly told police he carried out the attacks in retaliation for the deaths of his parents and two elder brothers during a communal conflict that occurred in the area about 29 years ago.
The command said two bodies believed to be those of the victims have been recovered and deposited at a hospital morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
However, the police stressed that the suspect’s claims remain subject to verification as investigations continue.
“The Command emphasizes that the suspect’s statements remain subject to thorough investigation and verification,” the statement noted.
The police urged residents and members of the public to avoid spreading rumours or unverified information capable of jeopardising ongoing investigations or creating tension within the community.
The command advised the public to rely only on official information released by the Cross River State Police Command regarding the case.
