The Abia State Police Command has arrested two young men over an alleged case of conspiracy, attempted abduction of a newborn, and drug-related offences in Umuahia.
In a statement released on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, the suspects were identified as 24-year-old Nzubechi Chinagorom and 25-year-old Chinonso Chibundu, both residents of Olokoro in Umuahia South Local Government Area.
According to the statement, the incident occurred on May 25, 2026, when the suspects allegedly stormed the home of a 32-year-old woman, Miss Amarachi Chinyereugo, at the same location.
It was alleged that Chinagorom attempted to forcibly take away the woman’s two-week-old baby girl, leading to a violent struggle with the mother. During the confrontation, he reportedly stabbed the woman with a kitchen knife, causing the infant to fall and sustain a head injury.
Police further stated that Chinonso Chibundu stayed outside the residence, allegedly keeping watch while the attack took place.
Following a distress alert from the victim, the suspects fled the scene but were later tracked down and arrested at a nearby bus stop. They were also reportedly found in possession of suspected illicit drugs at the time of arrest.
Both the mother and her baby were immediately taken to a hospital for medical attention and have since been discharged after receiving treatment.
The command added that investigations have been concluded at the State Criminal Investigation Department, with the suspects expected to be charged to court on June 2, 2026.
The command urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station to aid crime prevention efforts.
