The Nigeria Police Force has called for calm following reports of xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians in South Africa, warning against any form of reprisal attacks within Nigeria.
In a statement addressing public concerns, the Force said it is aware of growing tension linked to alleged attacks on Nigerians abroad and fears of possible retaliatory actions against South African nationals and interests in the country.
The statement noted that following a Joint Intelligence Board meeting held on May 18, 2026, and chaired by the National Security Adviser, security and intelligence agencies carried out a comprehensive review of the situation to assess potential risks and coordinate appropriate responses.
The Police assured Nigerians that there is no immediate cause for panic, adding that the Federal Government is engaging South African authorities and other stakeholders through diplomatic, intelligence, and security channels to address the issue peacefully.
While acknowledging public concern over the reported incidents, the Force strongly warned citizens against taking the law into their own hands, stressing that any form of violence, intimidation, destruction of property, or hate speech would not be tolerated.
It reiterated that Nigeria remains a country governed by the rule of law, adding that all legally resident persons, regardless of nationality, are entitled to protection under the law.
The Police further cautioned that any attempt to target South African citizens, businesses, diplomatic missions, or related interests in Nigeria would be treated as a criminal offence and dealt with accordingly.
The statement also urged members of the public to avoid spreading unverified or inflammatory information, particularly on social media, warning that such actions could worsen tensions and obstruct ongoing diplomatic efforts.
The Force added that in collaboration with other security and intelligence agencies, it has strengthened surveillance and deployed personnel to protect critical national infrastructure, foreign missions, and other strategic locations to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
