Suspected armed bandits have kidnapped retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, alongside his wife in Katsina State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday along the Katsina–Matazu road while the retired senior military officer was travelling with his spouse.
Sources said the attackers intercepted their vehicle in Matazu Local Government Area before whisking the couple away to an unknown destination.
It was further gathered that the driver of the vehicle managed to escape the attack with a gunshot injury.
Maj.-Gen. Abubakar (retd.), during his service in the Nigerian Armed Forces, served as a spokesperson for the Defence Headquarters, where he played a key role in military information management and communication.
The abduction has heightened concerns over the worsening security situation in the North-West, particularly Katsina State, which has continued to experience frequent cases of kidnapping and armed attacks on residents and travellers.
The latest incident adds to ongoing worries about insecurity in the region despite sustained military operations against armed criminal groups.
Efforts to obtain an official reaction from military authorities were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
