2027: LP Faction Presents Dr. Chibuzo Okereke as Presidential Candidate Amid Internal Rift

The Labour Party has officially presented Dr. Chibuzo Okereke as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, following what it described as a consensus reached among party stakeholders and members.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, on Saturday.

However, the development comes amid growing internal divisions within the party, as a separate faction reportedly led by Julius Abure had earlier adopted the National Youth Leader, Prince Kennedy Ahanotu, as its own presidential candidate during parallel primaries in Abuja.

The factional primaries also produced candidates for governorship and House of Representatives seats, further deepening tensions within the opposition party ahead of the 2027 polls.

In response, the Asogwa-led leadership insisted that Dr. Okereke’s emergence was legitimate and reflected a unified position of the party structure.

He described Okereke as a reform-minded academic and governance expert with strong credentials in public policy and institutional development.

According to the statement, Okereke’s nomination followed a broad consensus affirmed in Abuja on May 30, 2026.

The party further highlighted his background as a policy strategist and governance specialist, noting his leadership of the ERGAF-AFRICA Legislative Governance Innovation and Policy Hub, where he focuses on legislative research and institutional reforms.

It also pointed out his role as a consultant to National Assembly committees and his academic engagement as a lecturer in Public Policy and Administration at Miva Open University, Abuja.

Beyond his professional achievements, the Labour Party said Okereke has consistently contributed to youth empowerment, education development, and democratic reform efforts, describing him as a strong advocate of accountable leadership.

The party added that his emergence represents its vision for “competent, transparent and transformational leadership” ahead of the 2027 elections.
