Kebbi NLC Hails Governor Idris at Three Years, Demands Better Welfare for Workers

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Kebbi State has congratulated Governor Nasir Idris and residents of the state on the administration’s third year in office, describing the period as productive and significant.

In a statement released on Sunday, the State NLC Chairman, Murtala Usman, praised the governor for what he called notable progress across key sectors of the state’s economy.

Usman said the Idris-led administration had made visible gains in infrastructure development, education, healthcare delivery, and the welfare of workers since assuming office three years ago.

He noted that the union’s recognition of the governor was informed by what it described as a labour-friendly approach to governance, especially given Idris’ background as a former union leader.

According to him, the implementation of the ₦75,000 minimum wage, alongside consistent payment of salaries, pensions, and gratuities, reflected the government’s commitment to workers’ wellbeing.

Usman also commended improvements in the health sector, including the renovation and construction of general hospitals across the state, as well as the recruitment of teachers to strengthen the education system and eliminate casual staffing in government institutions.

He further highlighted the commissioning of a modern state secretariat as a major milestone that has enhanced the working environment for civil servants.

In addition, the NLC applauded the provision of 50 buses to ease transportation challenges for workers and residents, describing it as a practical intervention with immediate impact. The recruitment of 2,000 teachers was also praised as a timely step that boosted the education sector.

However, the labour union urged the state government to do more in addressing housing shortages faced by civil servants, calling for the construction of affordable housing units across the state.

Usman also recommended that organised labour be included in housing allocation committees to ensure transparency and fairness in the distribution process.

He reaffirmed the NLC’s commitment to engaging the government constructively in defending the rights and welfare of workers through dialogue and lawful means.
