C’River:Man Kills Two Over 29-Year-Old Grudge

By Abasi Ita

The Cross River State Police Command has revealed that a 40 year old suspect arrested in connection with the killing of two persons in Creek Town, Odukpani Local Government Area, allegedly carried out the attacks to avenge the deaths of his parents and two elder brothers during a communal crisis nearly three decades ago.

The suspect, identified as Akaninyene Eretus, was arrested alongside a female companion following investigations into the killings that occurred on May 24 and 25, 2026.

Police spokesperson, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, disclosed that the suspect who hails from Akwa Ibom state confessed during interrogation to killing two men identified as Okokon and Okon.

According to the police, one of the victims was allegedly killed while asleep, while the other was attacked with a machete.

ASP Eitokpah said the suspect claimed his parents and two elder brothers were killed during a communal conflict in Creek Town about 29 years ago and that he had harboured thoughts of revenge ever since.

The police said two bodies believed to be those of the victims have been recovered and deposited in a morgue for identification and autopsy.

The Command noted that investigations are ongoing and that the suspect’s claims remain subject to verification.

“Investigations are ongoing and the suspect’s statements remain subject to thorough investigation and verification,” the police spokesman stated.

The police also cautioned residents against spreading rumours or unverified information that could undermine the investigation or create tension within the community.

Residents were advised to rely on official information from the Cross River State Police Command as efforts continue to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killings.

Further updates, the Command said, will be provided as investigations progress.
