The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has intensified efforts to build a more responsive and combat-ready elite unit, insisting that only highly disciplined and physically resilient personnel will be retained for special operations in the face of evolving security threats.
The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, restated this commitment during the final Physical Fitness Test for trainees of Special Forces Course 13/2026, held at the Regiment Training Centre Annex (RTCA), Bauchi.
He said the changing security environment requires well-trained personnel who can respond swiftly and effectively to terrorism, insurgency and other internal security challenges across the country.
According to him, the Air Force will continue to strengthen its capacity to deploy personnel capable of confronting criminals wherever they operate.
“The Nigerian Air Force will continue to train, equip and deploy personnel capable of taking the fight to terrorists, kidnappers and other criminal elements wherever they may be found,” Aneke said.
He added that there would be no safe space for those undermining national peace and security, stressing that the Service remains firmly committed to protecting citizens.
“Their actions against innocent Nigerians will not go unanswered. Our resolve remains firm, and our duty to defend the nation is non-negotiable,” he added.
The Commandant of RTCA Bauchi, Squadron Leader Edeama Akpan, explained that the assessment was a key stage in the selection process, designed to filter out candidates who lack the required physical strength, mental toughness and operational discipline.
He noted that special forces personnel are expected to operate in harsh and dangerous environments where endurance, focus and commitment often determine mission success.
According to him, the exercise serves as a major benchmark for measuring readiness for advanced operational responsibilities.
Also speaking, the NAF spokesperson, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said the test reflects the Air Force’s drive to sustain a highly capable fighting force for ongoing military operations nationwide.
He added that the training programme is structured to produce officers who are physically fit, mentally resilient and fully prepared for modern security challenges.
“Through sustained investment in realistic training and uncompromising standards, the NAF continues to build an elite force prepared to dominate the battlespace, protect innocent lives and contribute decisively to national security objectives,” he said.
