President Bola Tinubu on Monday welcomed the newly sworn-in President of the Republic of Benin, Romuald Wadagni, during a meeting held in Lagos State.
The Beninese leader was received at Tinubu’s Ikoyi residence following his arrival in the city, according to a brief statement from the Presidency.
Wadagni’s visit marks his first official bilateral engagement with the Nigerian leader since assuming office about a week ago.
Before the private meeting, the visiting president was received by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who escorted him to the President’s residence.
The two leaders subsequently held a closed-door discussion that lasted approximately 30 minutes, although details of their conversation were not disclosed.
Wadagni was inaugurated on May 24, 2026, after succeeding former President Patrice Talon, following his victory in the April 12 presidential election. Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, represented Tinubu at the inauguration ceremony.
The Republic of Benin shares a western border with Nigeria and remains a key partner in regional cooperation within the Economic Community of West African States, particularly in trade and security matters across the Gulf of Guinea.
Tinubu, who previously served as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government between 2023 and 2024, continues to play a significant role in regional diplomacy.
The outcome of the meeting between both leaders was yet to be made public at the time of filing this report.
