The Kogi State Government has ordered the immediate suspension of the Echane Festival in Ebiraland, citing credible security threats that could destabilize Kogi Central Senatorial District.
In a press statement signed by the Hon. Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, the government said the decision followed “credible intelligence reports indicating that activities associated with the festival have the potential to threaten public peace, safety and security, as well as lead to a breakdown of law and order in parts of Kogi Central Senatorial District.”
While acknowledging the cultural value of the festival, the government stressed that public safety must come first. “While the Government recognizes and respects the cultural significance of traditional festivals and their role in preserving the rich heritage of our people, the security of lives and property remains the primary responsibility of government and must take precedence over all other considerations,” Fanwo stated.
Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo has directed that the Echane Festival be halted “with immediate effect in the interest of peace and public safety.” He also ordered all security agencies in the state to enforce the suspension without exception.
The statement warned that violations would attract legal action: “Any individual or group found organizing, participating in or promoting activities connected with the suspended festival will be dealt with in accordance with the law.”
The state government is now appealing to stakeholders in Ebiraland to cooperate with security operatives. “The Kogi State Government urges all traditional rulers, community leaders, opinion leaders, youth groups and residents of the affected communities to cooperate with security agencies and support ongoing efforts to maintain peace and stability across the State,” Fanwo said.
He reiterated the administration’s commitment to protecting residents, adding, “The government remains committed to the protection of lives and property and will continue to take proactive measures to preserve the peace for which Kogi State is known.”
Security agencies have been placed on alert across Kogi Central to ensure full compliance with the directive. The Echane Festival, a traditional event celebrated by the Ebira people, will remain suspended until further notice.
