Reps Back Akande’s Bid for International Court of Justice Seat

The House of Representatives has thrown its weight behind Nigerian-born legal scholar, Professor Dapo Akande, in his bid for election to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for the 2027–2036 term.

The endorsement was made on Wednesday in Abuja by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Benjamin Kalu, during a courtesy visit to the National Assembly by Akande and representatives of the British High Commission.

Kalu said Akande’s nomination by the United Kingdom was a reflection of his outstanding contributions to international law, adding that it also highlights Nigeria’s growing influence in global legal and diplomatic affairs.

According to him, the House is fully in support of the candidacy, describing Akande as a scholar whose career has brought pride to the country.

He noted that the emergence of a Nigerian-born jurist for a seat at the world’s top judicial body represents more than symbolism, but a recognition of shared legal values and international justice.

“The nomination of a Nigerian-born scholar to the world’s highest judicial bench is not symbolic; it is recognition of a shared legal destiny,” Kalu said, stressing the importance of stronger African representation on global judicial platforms.

He also linked Akande’s achievements to his academic beginnings in Nigeria, noting that his foundation was built at Obafemi Awolowo University before rising to global prominence.

Kalu further recalled that Akande’s career has included service as Chichele Professor of Public International Law at Oxford, appearances before the ICJ and the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, and membership of the United Nations International Law Commission.

He urged the Federal Government to intensify diplomatic engagement through regional and global bodies such as the African Union, ECOWAS, and the United Nations General Assembly to strengthen support for Akande’s candidacy.

Kalu also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for enhancing Nigeria’s international relations, expressing optimism about Akande’s prospects.

He challenged the nominee to uphold justice, fairness, and impartiality if elected, noting that the ICJ is currently handling sensitive global disputes involving genocide, armed conflict, and territorial issues.

“Africa does not merely need judges; it needs judges who understand that law is protection, not just description,” he added.

Earlier in his remarks, Akande said his visit was to formally seek Nigeria’s backing for his nomination.

He commended Nigeria’s commitment to constitutional democracy and the rule of law, while expressing appreciation to the National Assembly for its support.

Akande pledged that if elected to the ICJ, he would contribute to strengthening international justice and advancing global legal standards.
