Kwankwaso Threatens Exit From NDC Over Kano Candidate Replacement Dispute

Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has reportedly threatened to quit the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) following a fresh internal crisis triggered by the replacement of several candidates linked to his Kwankwasiyya faction in Kano State.

The development comes after the party moved to substitute a number of candidates earlier submitted by the Kwankwasiyya bloc, allegedly to enforce a pre-existing 60/40 power-sharing arrangement within the state chapter.

According to a document cited by Daily Post and signed by the Kano State NDC Chairman, Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga, the adjustments were made to reflect an agreement that allocated 60 per cent of party positions and tickets to the Kwankwasiyya faction, while the remaining 40 per cent was reserved for the original party structure.

The party said the revised arrangement was necessary to ensure compliance with the agreed formula and to balance representation between both political blocs operating within the state chapter.

The document, which was also copied to the party’s National Leader Henry Seriake Dickson, Kwankwaso, and the NDC North-West Zonal leadership, outlined new candidates for several federal constituency seats across Kano State.

Some of the approved candidates include Barr. Isma’il Idris Sani (Kumbotso), Nasiru Ali Ahmed (Nassarawa), Kabiru Ishaq Sa’id (Kano Municipal), and Barr. Dayyabu Jamilu Ibrahim (Doguwa/Tudun Wada), among others.

Adjustments were also reportedly made to several Kano State House of Assembly constituencies, including Dala, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo, and Dawakin Kudu.

Meanwhile, the NDC maintained that the changes were in line with the agreed internal zoning and sharing formula designed to prevent conflict between both factions.

The latest development adds to growing tensions within the party, even as it continues to position itself for the 2027 general elections with a major presidential ticket already featuring Peter Obi and Kwankwaso as flagbearers of the emerging opposition alliance.
